Roland TB-303

Roland sold the TB-303 Bass Line from 1981 as a computerised bass player, built to sit beside the TR-606 Drumatix in place of a bassist. Tadao Kikumoto designed it, and it flopped because it sounded nothing like a bass guitar. Roland dropped it in 1984. Secondhand ones were cheap, and in 1987 Chicago's Phuture twisted its knobs while it played to make Acid Tracks, often called the first acid house record. Hardfloor, Josh Wink and Fatboy Slim followed, the last with a single called Everybody Needs a 303. One oscillator gives a saw or square wave into a resonant filter, and the built-in sequencer lets you add accent and slide to each step, which is where the squelch comes from. It runs on four C batteries or an adapter, and the batteries keep its 64 patterns alive when it's off. Some 303s have been modified, the Devil Fish being the best known, and clones look a lot like it in thumbnails, so confirm exactly what's for sale.

What to check before you buy

Robin Whittle, who designed the Devil Fish mod, says the unsealed tact switches clog with dust and can make a 303 impossible to program. Leaking batteries corrode the contacts, and he has also found corroded pins on the memory chips that stop patterns saving properly.

  1. 01Buttons: Ask for a video programming a short pattern from scratch, using every note button plus accent and slide. Each press should register once, on the first try.
  2. 02Memory: Ask the seller to save a pattern, switch off, and play it back. It should come back exactly as written.
  3. 03Battery bay: Ask for a photo of the battery compartment and its contacts. They should be clean, with no rust or crusty residue.
  4. 04Knobs: Ask for a clip sweeping cutoff, resonance, env mod, decay and accent while a pattern runs. The sound should change smoothly with no crackle or dropouts.
  5. 05Mods: Ask whether it has been modified, and by whom. A Devil Fish or other mod changes the sound and adds controls, so make sure that's what you want.
  6. 06Originality: Check the photos for Roland and TB-303 on the panel, and ask for a photo of the serial number. Clones such as the Behringer TD-3 look similar in small pictures.

Buying guide

Which one to buy

§ Oct 5, 2026

Only about 7 TB-303s are for sale, so the $3,825–4,525 delivered band is a rough read, and none is titled tested or serviced. We'd start with the one in Australia at $3,180 delivered, and before paying get a video programming a pattern with every note button plus accent and slide, since dust-clogged switches are the 303's known fault, and a photo of the serial number to rule out a clone. Skip the two titled no mods from zero-feedback sellers, since a new account asking thousands is a known scam pattern. Soundgas's one, boxed with its bag, asks $7,898, about $3,370 over the band, and the box is the only stated reason.
