Before the Prophet-5, every polysynth sound had to be rebuilt by hand from the knobs. Dave Smith and John Bowen designed it in 1977, Smith showed it at NAMM in January 1978, and it stored every setting of a sound in memory, which no polysynth had done before. It went everywhere. That's the Prophet-5 on the opening chords of Michael Jackson's Thriller, the pad on a-ha's Take On Me and Radiohead's Everything In Its Right Place, and John Carpenter scored films with one. Three revisions matter to a buyer. Only 182 Rev 1s were hand-built, in koa wood cases. The Rev 2 moved to walnut, added cassette patch storage and sold more than 1,000, and both early revisions use SSM chips. From 1980 the Rev 3 switched to Curtis (CEM) chips, and nearly 6,000 were built. Sound On Sound found the Rev 3 slightly colder than the early ones, but it's the most reliable and the easiest to get serviced, and a Rev 3.3 holds 120 patches instead of 40. Sequential's 2020 Rev 4 is a separate, new synth.
Early Prophets are known for unstable tuning, and Sound On Sound warned that many Rev 1 and Rev 2 parts can't be bought new and few shops will take them on. The Rev 3's control pots have nylon shafts that can snap. None shipped with MIDI, so any MIDI jacks you see are a later kit.
Buying guide
Vintage Prophet-5 supply is thin, with about 6 Rev 1, 2 and 3 units for sale, so the $8,900–16,175 delivered band isn't a market read. Most Prophet-5 results on eBay are Sequential's 2020 Rev 4, and a plain "Sequential Prophet-5" title without "Circuits" or a Rev 1–3 number is usually that new synth, as is any unit with a USB port or a Vintage knob in the photos. We'd buy the US Rev 3.3 titled Pro Serviced at $8,199 delivered, since the Rev 3 is the most reliable revision and the easiest to get serviced, or the Rev 2 at $8,904 if you want the early SSM-chip sound. Skip the zero-feedback listing at $7,000, a known scam pattern at this price, and pay only through eBay checkout.
