Oberheim · Analog polysynth · Pre-MIDI classics
The OB-Xa is the synth playing the big keyboard riff on Van Halen's 'Jump' from 1984. Oberheim built it as the streamlined follow-up to the OB-X, whose voice cards used mostly discrete parts. The OB-Xa moved to Curtis chips, added a keyboard split and layer, and let you choose a 12 dB or 24 dB filter slope. It came in four, six and eight voice versions, each voice with two oscillators, on a 61-key keyboard with no velocity or aftertouch. Early units store 32 patches and many later ones store 120. Prince, Gary Numan, New Order, The Police and Rush all used one. It never had MIDI from the factory, so a MIDI port on the back means someone added it later. Go for an eight-voice unit if you can, since that's the full instrument. Ask the seller how many voices it plays before you look at anything else.
Patch memory that's lost after power-off is a common complaint from owners. The Curtis chips in each voice were scarce for years, though Curtis, Coolaudio and Alfa have made them again since 2016.
Buying guide
For a working OB-Xa we'd take the US unit titled Fully Serviced with an Encore MIDI retrofit at $9,999 plus freight, or bid on the WORKS! auction, now $2,390 delivered, up to about $8,000. About 10 are for sale, 2 of them as-is, and working ones ask $8,450–12,100 delivered; a stated service, a MIDI retrofit and a flight case push a unit up that band. Ask how many voices it plays and for a video of each, check that patches survive a power-off, and get double boxing or a road case plus insurance in writing, since this is a big, heavy keyboard. Treat music-outlet-shop's two generic all-caps listings from Germany and the zero-feedback Swiss seller with care, and pay only through eBay checkout.
$2,390.00est. delivered
Titled WORKS!, with eight voices and 120 patches, and bidding sits at $2,390 delivered with six days left. It will climb a long way; we'd stop around $8,000 delivered, just under the band, since there's no service claim.

$5,550.00est. delivered
An eight-voice OB-Xa listed as-is for $5,550 delivered, about $2,900 under the band. Price it as a repair job on a 40-year-old poly and ask what does and doesn't work; the Curtis chips it uses are made again, which helps.
