Sequential Circuits · Analog polysynth · Early MIDI era
The Prophet VS was Sequential's last big swing, and it brought a new idea called vector synthesis. Each of its eight voices mixes four digital waveforms, and a joystick set in a diamond crossfades between them while you play. The waves are 12-bit, but the filters and amps are analog Curtis chips, and that mix of grit and warmth is why VS pads still sound like nothing else. Factory patch 69, Filmusic, became famous on its own. It came out in 1986 and couldn't save the company. Sequential closed late in 1987, Yamaha bought what was left and built the SY22 on VS ideas, and Dave Smith's team went to Korg and made the Wavestation. Sound On Sound counted around 2,500 keyboards and just 900 rack versions. Trent Reznor, Prince and John Carpenter used one, and Rush leaned on its choir sound for Hold Your Fire. Buy the best-working one you can find. The joystick and data slider have no new replacements, and the longtime Sequential parts house, Wine Country Productions, closed in September 2026.
Sound On Sound called the original velocity keyboard a disaster, and designer Chris Meyer says the first aftertouch sensors burned out. The CEM5530 sample-and-hold chips are a common failure, and one dead I-625 custom wave chip silences one of the four waves.
Buying guide
Only four Prophet VSs are for sale, and two are the VS Rack, the real thing but one that needs a MIDI keyboard to play, so the $7,075–8,675 delivered band is thin. For the money we'd take the US dealer's VS Rack titled Pro Serviced at $7,727 delivered, or pay $9,153 for the same dealer's VS titled Restored if the photos show the keyboard. The $5,119 listing from Germany sits about $2,000 under the band, so check that seller's feedback count and history, and pay only through eBay checkout. The joystick and data slider have no new replacements, so ask for a video moving the joystick around the diamond on a pad and sweeping the slider end to end.
$7,727.02est. delivered
Titled Pro Serviced by a US dealer, at $7,727 delivered near the bottom of the band. It's the VS Rack, so budget for a MIDI keyboard if you don't have one.
Sequential Prophet VS Rack Pro Serviced Vector Synthesizer VINTAGE SYNTH DEALER
$9,153.36est. delivered
Titled Restored by the same US dealer, at $9,153 delivered, about $480 over the band. The title doesn't say Rack, so check the photos for the keyboard, and ask whether the restoration covered the velocity and aftertouch.

Our take
VS Rack titled 1986, from Australia, with no service claim. Check the voltage plate, since a 240V unit needs a step-up transformer on US mains.
