Roland Juno-106

Roland launched the Juno-106 in February 1984 as the MIDI follow-up to the Juno-60, and it stayed Roland's best-selling synth until the D-50 arrived. It keeps six voices with one DCO each and the Juno chorus, then adds 128 patch memories, the left/right/push bender lever Roland still uses, and MIDI that sends and receives every slider move. It dropped the Juno-60's arpeggiator. Vince Clarke, Daft Punk, Tame Impala and Calvin Harris have all used one. The weak spot is the 80017A, a resin-coated module that holds the IR3109 filter and BA662 amp chips for one voice. There are six of them, and the originals fail with age. The safest buy is a 106 where all six have been swapped for new clones such as Analogue Renaissance's, which Philadelphia repair shop Bell Tone Synth Works says sound identical. The Juno-106S and HS-60 are the same synth with built-in speakers, and the same checks apply.

What to check before you buy

The six 80017A voice chips are the big one. As the resin coating and solder joints inside them age, voices crackle (often worse once the synth warms up), hang or go silent. Noisy MN3009 chorus chips, unreliable buttons, jumpy sliders and a crackly volume pot are the other regulars.

  1. 01Voice chips: Ask the seller whether the 80017A voice chips have been replaced, and with what. All six done with new clones is the best case, since originals keep failing.
  2. 02Voice test: Ask for a video of the built-in test mode (power on holding Key Transpose, then press Poly 1 and Poly 2) with one key tapped six times. Each voice should sound the same, with no crackle, dropout or distortion.
  3. 03Warm-up: Ask the seller to play it again after it has been on for half an hour. Failing voice chips often start crackling once the synth is warm.
  4. 04Chorus noise: Ask for a clip with Chorus I and II switched on and no keys held. You should hear only faint hiss, with no loud rushing wash.
  5. 05Panel: Ask the seller to sweep each slider and press every patch button on video. Sounds should change smoothly, and each button should respond once per press.
  6. 06Power cord: Check the photos for the original two-prong power cord. It's an uncommon Roland lead, so a listing without one means hunting down a match.
  7. 07Memory: Ask whether the soldered memory battery has been replaced. Patches should still be there after the synth has been off for a day.

Buying guide

Which one to buy

§ Oct 5, 2026

For a 106 you won't have to fix first, we'd pay $2,098 delivered for the one in Japan titled "6 VCF Chips Replaced Serviced", or $2,475 for the serviced 120v one already in the US. About 51 are for sale and most ask $1,975–2,425 delivered, with serviced units and new voice chips at the top, while the cheapest ship from Japan, where they're often 100V and need a step-down transformer on US mains. The six 80017A voice chips are what fail, so ask whether all six were replaced and with what, and get a video of every voice after half an hour warm. Skip the zero-feedback sellers, and pass on the $4,337 restored one, which asks about $1,900 over the band.
