Korg · Analog monosynth · Pre-MIDI classics
Korg launched the MS-20 in 1978 as the bigger sibling of the MS-10, part of a semi-modular family that also included the MS-50 module and the SQ-10 sequencer. It's a two-oscillator monosynth with a resonant high-pass and low-pass filter in series, two envelopes, a modulation generator, and an external signal processor that lets you run a guitar or a voice through the filters. Around 35 patch points sit on the panel, so you can play it without a single cable or patch it like a small modular. It stayed in production until 1983, and Aphex Twin, Daft Punk, Portishead and Jean-Michel Jarre all appear among its users. There are two filter versions. Early units used Korg's own Korg35 filter chip, and later ones switched to an OTA-based filter board. Most players prefer the early one, and it's the version Korg copied for the 2013 MS-20 Mini. The Mini, Kit, MS-20M and FS reissues are separate instruments, so read the listing closely and ask which filter an original has.
The original VCA adds a steady background hiss, and the Hz/V pitch control tracks imperfectly, so it won't follow volt-per-octave gear without a converter. Sound On Sound notes that almost all of its parts are standard op-amps and chips, which keeps repairs straightforward.
Buying guide
For an MS-20 you can play, we'd take the late model titled serviced at $2,211 delivered, or the tested late model with a case at $1,662 if you'll handle any service yourself. There are about 18 for sale, most asking $1,975–2,450 delivered, and nearly all ship from Japan, so check the voltage plate and plan on a step-down transformer for a 100V unit. Early units with the Korg35 filter are the ones players prefer and late models use the OTA filter, so ask for a photo of the filter board before paying an early-model price. Skip the early unit titled junk at $2,722 delivered, which asks more than working ones.
$1,661.96est. delivered
The lowest delivered MS-20 at $1,662, titled tested and sold with a case. It's a late model with the OTA filter, and late units ask less than early ones here.
KORG MS-20 Vintage Analog Monophonic Synthesizer Late Model w/ Case Tested
$1,905.29est. delivered
Titled tested and working at $1,905 delivered, about $70 under the band. The title doesn't say early or late, so ask for a filter board photo, and if it's a Korg35 unit you've found a bargain.
KORG MS-20 Vintage Analog Synthesizer Tested Working From Japan
$2,211.00est. delivered
Titled serviced, for $2,211 delivered, mid-band. Ask what the service covered and for a video sweeping both filters, and check the voltage plate, since it ships from Japan.
KORG MS-20 Late Model Vintage Monophonic Analog Synthesizer Serviced
$1,982.00est. delivered
The cheapest early model here, the Korg35 filter version players prefer, at $1,982 delivered. It's titled tested and powers on, so ask for a video sweeping both filters into self-oscillation, and check the back has no MIDI or USB sockets.
