Moog · Analog monosynth · Pre-MIDI classics
The Prodigy was Moog Music's small, affordable monosynth, built from 1979 to 1984, with about 11,000 made. Bob Moog had left the company two years before it came out, and Vintage Synth Explorer notes it was designed without him. You get two oscillators that can be synced, Moog's 24 dB low-pass ladder filter, an LFO, one envelope for the filter and another for the amplifier, and 32 keys with pitch and mod wheels. There's no patch memory, so every sound lives on the knobs. The band The Prodigy took its name from it, and Liam Howlett used one on tracks in the early 1990s. Units from serial number 4610 on have CV and gate inputs on the back, and earlier ones don't. Get a later one if you want to play it from a sequencer or a MIDI-to-CV box. None shipped with MIDI, though retrofit kits exist. It's the easiest way into a vintage Moog filter.
No model-specific failure is well documented. The common surprise is an early unit, below serial 4610, that has no CV and gate inputs, and any MIDI on one is an aftermarket kit.
Buying guide
We'd buy the Prodigy titled newly serviced at $1,565 delivered from Canada, the only one here with a service claim. There are about 7 for sale and most ask $1,400–1,600 delivered; three ship from the UK or Germany, so check the voltage plate, since a 230–240V unit needs a step-up transformer on US mains. Read the serial in the photos too, because only units from 4610 on have CV and gate inputs for a sequencer or MIDI-to-CV box. Skip the German one at $2,255 delivered unless the seller can say why it's $650 over the band.
$1,099.42est. delivered
The lowest known delivered price at $1,099, about $300 under the band, from a US seller. There's no test claim, so ask for a video playing all 32 keys, and check the back for CV and gate jacks, since a 1979 unit may predate serial 4610.
