Oberheim launched the OB-8 in early 1983 as the successor to the OB-Xa, and it's the fourth synth in the OB series. It plays eight voices with two oscillators each, on a 61-key keyboard with no velocity or aftertouch. The filter switches between 12 dB and 24 dB slopes like the OB-Xa's, and the OB-8 adds a second page of front panel functions, three LFOs and two-part splits and layers. It holds 120 patches plus 12 splits and 12 doubles, and saves to cassette. About 3,000 were made before it was dropped in 1985. It arrived just before MIDI did, and some were fitted with MIDI later, so check the back panel before you assume it'll talk to a computer. Its users run from Prince and the Pet Shop Boys to The KLF and Daft Punk. If you want an OB-series Oberheim that fits easily into a modern setup, a MIDI-equipped OB-8 is the one to hunt for.
Owners report units that reset themselves, voices at uneven volume and keys that respond unevenly. A unit without a MIDI retrofit only speaks CV/gate and Oberheim's own interface.
