Roland Juno-60

The Juno-60 arrived in September 1982, a few months after the Juno-6, and added 56 patch memories and a DCB socket, Roland's pre-MIDI digital link. Both used digitally controlled oscillators, which kept six voices in tune at a time when most polysynths drifted. Each voice has one DCO plus a sub-oscillator, and you also get a four-position high-pass filter, an arpeggiator and the two-button chorus that became the Juno sound. It's on a-ha's Take On Me and Cyndi Lauper's Time After Time, and it was a key Chicago house instrument. The 60 doesn't use the Juno-106's 80017A voice module. Its IR3109 filter and BA662 amp chips sit on the board as separate parts, so the 106's famous chip failures don't apply here. Vintage Synth Explorer rates it a little punchier than the 106, partly because its envelope can sweep the pulse width. Roland stopped making it in February 1984, when the 106 arrived. It has no MIDI, so budget for a DCB-to-MIDI converter or a fitted MIDI kit if you want to sequence it.

What to check before you buy

The soldered lithium memory battery is the usual culprit. Roland told owners to replace it every five years, and when it runs flat the patches scramble or vanish. The chorus uses the same MN3009 delay chips as the Juno-106, and they get noisier as they age.

  1. 01Patch memory: Ask the seller to call up a few saved patches after the synth has been off overnight. They should load intact, with no scrambled or blank sounds.
  2. 02Battery: Ask whether the soldered memory battery has been replaced, and when. Roland's manual says to change it every five years, so an original one is overdue.
  3. 03Voices: Ask for a video of a six-note chord held on a plain sawtooth patch, then each note played alone. Every note should sound even, with none quieter, duller or out of tune.
  4. 04Chorus: Ask for a clip with Chorus I, II and both together, with no keys held. Some hiss is normal, but there shouldn't be a loud rush or crackle.
  5. 05Arpeggiator: Ask the seller to run the arpeggiator in each mode and range. It should step evenly and stay in time.
  6. 06MIDI: Check the back panel in the photos for the DCB socket and any added MIDI jacks. If a MIDI kit is fitted, ask for a video of it playing from a MIDI keyboard.

Which one to buy

§ Oct 5, 2026

We'd buy the one from Japan titled 117V, serviced and tested, at $3,198 delivered, or the one titled tested working with a hard case at $3,293. About 19 are for sale and most ask $3,200–4,025 delivered, with serviced and cased units higher, and the AS-IS one from Japan asks $3,480, which is working-unit money for a repair job. Ask whether the soldered memory battery has been replaced, since Roland said to change it every five years and a flat one scrambles the patches, and get a clip of the chorus with no keys held to hear how noisy it is. Skip the zero-feedback sellers, including the $2,319 one that's the lowest ask here.
