Korg Polysix

Korg released the Polysix in 1981 at roughly a third of what a Prophet-5 or Oberheim OB-X cost, which put programmable polyphony within reach of working bands. It has six voices with one VCO and a sub-oscillator each, a 24 dB per octave low-pass filter, 32 patch memories in four banks of eight, an arpeggiator, and built-in chorus, phaser and ensemble effects. Sound On Sound heard more low-mid weight in it than in the Roland Juno it was built to compete with, and Kitaro, Geoff Downes, Keith Emerson and Tears for Fears are among its users. It had no MIDI from the factory, though Kenton, Kiwi Electronics and Tubbutec have all made retrofits. The one thing to check on any Polysix is the memory battery on the KLM-367 programmer board. The original batteries leak, and the fluid eats the circuit traces around them. Buy one where the battery is already out and the board is clean, and ask for the inside photo to prove it.

What to check before you buy

The memory battery on the KLM-367 programmer board leaks with age and corrodes the circuit traces around it. Sound On Sound also flags VCO drift that needs occasional recalibration, and sealed panel pots that can be hard to replace.

  1. 01Battery: Ask the seller for a photo inside showing the KLM-367 programmer board. The old battery should be gone or replaced, with no green or white crust on the board.
  2. 02Patch memory: Ask whether saved patches survive switching it off and on. They should, unless the old battery was removed and never replaced.
  3. 03Voices: Ask for a video playing each of the six voices one at a time with the filter half open. Every voice should match in pitch, tone and volume.
  4. 04Effects: Ask for a clip cycling through the chorus, phaser and ensemble. Each should sound clean, with no crackle or added noise.
  5. 05Knobs: Ask for a video turning every panel knob through its range. Each should change the sound smoothly, since the sealed pots are hard to replace.
  6. 06MIDI retrofit: Check the back panel in the photos for MIDI sockets, and ask who fitted them. A Kenton, Kiwi or Tubbutec retrofit is a plus.
  7. 07Tuning: On arrival, let it warm up and check the voices against a tuner. Small drift is normal, but voices far apart mean it needs calibrating.

Buying guide

Which one to buy

§ Oct 5, 2026

We'd buy the Polysix titled serviced at $1,620 delivered, or the tested one with its original hard case at $1,559, and both ship from Japan, so check the voltage plate and plan on a step-down transformer for a 100V unit. There are about 18 for sale, most asking $1,550–2,375 delivered, and Kiwi MIDI upgrades and dealer service claims sit above that, up to $4,194. Whatever you buy, ask for a photo of the KLM-367 programmer board, since the original memory battery leaks and eats the traces around it. Skip the zero-feedback seller, and pay only through eBay checkout on a synth at this price.
