Moog Rogue

The Rogue came out in 1981 as Moog Music's entry-level monosynth, and it's about as simple as a Moog gets. Its two oscillators share one waveform setting and one octave setting, so you can't mix a sawtooth with a square. You can tune the second one anywhere from a half-step below the first to an octave above it. They feed a 24 dB low-pass filter with a single envelope, which has attack and release knobs and a three-way sustain switch. There's sample-and-hold, which the Prodigy lacks, plus pitch and mod wheels, CV and gate jacks and 32 keys, with no patch memory. Moog also built a near twin for RadioShack, the Realistic Concertmate MG-1, and later put the Rogue's circuit into the Taurus II bass pedals. The Rogue runs from an external power adapter, where the MG-1 has its supply built in. Peter Gabriel, Stereolab and 808 State used one. Buy it for bass, and make sure the adapter comes with it.

What to check before you buy

No model-specific failure is well documented. The usual problem with listings is a missing external power adapter, since the Rogue has no supply built in.

  1. 01Power adapter: Check the photos for the external power adapter. Ask about it before you buy, because the Rogue has no supply inside.
  2. 02Panel name: Read the name on the panel in the photos. A Realistic Concertmate MG-1 looks similar but is a different instrument.
  3. 03Keyboard: Ask for a video playing all 32 keys. Every key should sound on the first press.
  4. 04Oscillator 2: Ask for a clip sweeping oscillator 2's tuning against oscillator 1. It should move from a half-step below to an octave above.
  5. 05Filter: Ask for a slow cutoff sweep with the emphasis turned up. It should whistle smoothly through the range with no crackle.
  6. 06Sustain switch: Ask for a held note with the sustain switch in each of its three positions. Each position should change how the note holds.

Which one to buy

§ Oct 5, 2026

Only two complete Rogues are for sale, so the $1,500–1,525 band comes from a single listing and isn't a market read. We'd start with the US one titled working at $1,050 plus shipping the seller hasn't stated, since the other asks $1,523 delivered and says nothing about whether it works. Check the photos for the external power adapter, because the Rogue has no supply inside and the adapter is what these listings most often lack. Read the panel name too, since a Realistic Concertmate MG-1 looks similar but is a different instrument.
