Oberheim · Analog polysynth · Early MIDI era
Oberheim released the Xpander in 1984, a year before the Matrix-12, and it's basically a six-voice Matrix-12 with no keyboard. It's a large desktop box. It isn't a rack unit. Each voice has two oscillators, a multimode filter, up to five envelopes and five LFOs, plus lag, ramp and tracking generators, all wired together through Matrix Modulation, and it can do linear FM. Every voice has its own audio output, six in all, next to the mono and stereo outs. There are six CV and gate inputs for modular rigs alongside MIDI in, out and thru, and it can convert CV to MIDI. It holds 100 single and 100 multi patches. Vince Clarke, Depeche Mode, Tangerine Dream, Nine Inch Nails and Orbital have all used one. Oberheim built it until 1988. If you already own a keyboard and want Matrix-12 depth with half the voices, this is the way in. Plan to play it from a MIDI controller.
Owners report failing encoders, voices that fail autotune and power transformer trouble. Any of these can leave a unit dead or short of voices.
Buying guide
We'd buy the Xpander titled US version at $5,826 delivered, or the $5,120 one from Japan if you'll check the voltage plate and add a step-down transformer for a 100V unit. About 7 are for sale and most ask $5,475–7,125 delivered; no title claims a service, and the US sellers ask the most. Ask for an autotune run with all six voices passing, a clip turning each encoder slowly, and whether the power supply or transformer has been serviced, since those are the faults owners report. Skip tomoook-8's listing, which uses the same photo as foi-foi's.
$5,120.00delivered
The lowest ask at $5,120 delivered, with free shipping from Japan. Check the voltage plate, since a 100V unit needs a step-down transformer on US mains, and ask for a fresh photo, because the same picture is on another seller's listing.
