Yamaha CS-30
Yamaha brought out the CS-30 in 1977 as a big, knob-covered monosynth, and it's one of the most flexible single-voice synths the company made. It has two oscillators with separate outputs, two resonant filters, two VCAs and three envelopes, so you can run it as two signal paths and blend them. A ring modulator, external audio triggering and CV and gate jacks round it out. The part people remember is the simple 8-step sequencer, good for a bass line, a short pattern or an arpeggio. There's no memory and no MIDI, so every sound is set by hand on the 44-key instrument. Yamaha also sold a CS-30L in a bigger cabinet, listed in its own chronology as a separate model, so check which one a listing really is. 808 State are among its users. It gets far less attention than the CS-80, which suits a buyer who wants a serious analog mono with a sequencer built in.

What to check before you buy
Owner threads on Vintage Synth Explorer cover a failing VCA, so check that both signal paths work. It has no memory or MIDI, so there's no backup battery or processor to fail.
- 01Model: Check the panel in the photos for the model name. A CS-30L is a separate model in a larger cabinet.
- 02Both paths: Ask for a video playing each oscillator and filter path on its own, then both together. Both should be equally loud and clean.
- 03Sequencer: Ask for a clip running all eight sequencer steps. Every step should play its own pitch, in time.
- 04Filters: Ask for a video sweeping both filters with the resonance up. Each should sweep smoothly without crackle.
- 05Controls: Ask for a video moving every knob and slider. Each should change the sound smoothly, with no scratchy spots.
- 06Keys: Ask for a video playing all 44 keys slowly. Each should trigger one clean note.
- 07Tracking: On arrival, play octaves up the keyboard against a tuner. Small errors are normal, but large jumps mean it needs calibrating.
