Moog · Analog monosynth · Pre-MIDI classics
Moog released the Minimoog in 1970 to put the sound of its big modular systems into something a touring keyboard player could carry. It has three oscillators, and the third can double as a slow modulation source. They run into Moog's 24 dB low-pass ladder filter, played from a 44-key keyboard. It stayed in production until 1981, and more than 12,000 were built. Rick Wakeman used several on stage with Yes, Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea took it into jazz, Parliament used it on Flash Light, and Kraftwerk used it on Autobahn. The first few dozen carried the R.A. Moog name and a short 1972 run said Moog muSonics. The rest say Moog Music Inc., so the panel name helps you place one. Moog reissued the Model D from 2016 to 2017 and again from 2022, with MIDI, aftertouch and an extra LFO, and the reissues look almost identical. If you want an original, check the back for MIDI jacks. The keyboard is the usual weak spot, so we'd pick one with fresh key bushings.
The rubber key bushings perish with age, which leaves keys uneven, clicky and slow to make contact. Replacing them is fiddly, so many originals still have a tired keyboard, and one that's sat unused may need some playing before every key triggers.
Buying guide
For a Minimoog you can play the day it arrives, we'd pay $12,136 delivered for 123synthland's unit titled Meticulously Refurbished, or about $2,400 less for the 1974 US unit at $9,700 that lists a hard-shell travel case (HSTC in the title). There are about 16 original Model Ds for sale and most ask $9,225–12,400 delivered; dealer refurbishment sits at the top, and plain units from Japan and the US sit at the bottom. Check the back panel in the photos, because MIDI jacks usually mean a 2016 or 2022 reissue unless the seller can name a retrofit, and ask for a video playing every key, since perished key bushings are the Model D's usual weak spot. Pay only through eBay checkout, and skip the zero-feedback sellers asking $9,000 or more.

$8,537.00delivered
The lowest ask on an original Model D at $8,537 delivered, about $700 under the band. It ships from Japan with no service claim, so ask for a video of every key and check the voltage plate, since a 100V unit needs a step-down transformer on US mains.
MOOG MINIMOOG MODEL D (Early Version) [8773]
$9,700.00est. delivered
A 1974 US unit at $9,700 delivered, near the bottom of the band, and the HSTC in the title means a hard-shell travel case, which matters when a Minimoog ships. There's no service claim, so ask when it was last serviced and for a video playing every key.
1974 Minimoog Synthesizer Model D w/HSTC! -LL
$12,136.06est. delivered
Titled Meticulously Refurbished by a specialist dealer, at $12,136 delivered near the top of the band. That's about $2,400 over the plain units for work already done, so ask what it covered, key bushings included.
