The OB-SX is Oberheim's preset polysynth, a smaller, stage-friendly cousin of the OB-X made from 1980 to 1983. It has 48 keys and came with two, four or six voices, depending on how many voice cards were fitted. You can't save your own sounds. The presets live in ROM, and real-time filter and envelope controls let you shape them as you play. Early units have 24 presets, mid-production ones 48 and late ones 56. Todd McKinney programmed most of the first 24. Some owners sent Oberheim cassette dumps from an OB-X to have their own sounds burned into ROM, so a few units hold one-off presets. Its voices use Curtis chips, like the OB-Xa's. Geddy Lee and Prince used one, and Charles Bernstein used it on the A Nightmare on Elm Street score. If you want Oberheim voices in a smaller case and don't need to program them, get a six-voice unit with one of the later, larger preset sets.
There's no way to save sounds, so a dead voice card or a failed preset ROM can't be worked around from the panel. Early units have CV/gate and later ones Oberheim's own interface, and neither has MIDI.

Before you pay, ask how many voices and presets it has, since six voices is the full instrument and 24 presets marks an early unit against 48 or 56 on later ones. Ask for a video stepping through every preset, because there's no way to save sounds and a dead voice card or failed preset ROM can't be worked around from the panel. It has no MIDI, only CV/gate or Oberheim's own interface depending on age, so plan for that.
